A Brief History of British Porn & The UK Adult Industry
Babestation has been the biggest name in British Porn since the early 2000s, but there were decades of action in the world of British naughtiness going back to the 1960s…
Porn In Print
Prior to the 1960’s British porn was relatively hard to come by. Like many other aspects of British life, the Swinging Sixties saw a change in attitudes, and, inspired by Playboy in the USA, a series of porn magazines were launched. Legendary porn baron Bob Guccione was likely the first, launching Penthouse in the UK in 1965. Probably the best known British model in the 1960s was Mary Millington, who achieved a high level of fame.
The 1970s saw a massive rise in the amount of magazines on the market, as homegrown porn publishers spotted the opportunity. David Sullivan launched magazines such as Playbirds, Whitehouse and Rustler, and by the late 70s, Sullivan controlled over 50% of the adult magazine market. Close on his heels however was Paul Raymond, a strip club owner who branched out into print, launching classic top-shelf titles like Men Only, Club International, Razzle, and Escort.
The 1980s saw ever more magazines filling the shelves, with publisher Northern & Shell releasing over 45 different titles, including the classic Asian Babes.
In terms of models, the forerunners of the classic glamour model were people like Mary Millington and Fiona Richmond, who paved the way for rise of many glamour model celebrities during the late 1970s and 1980s, who were always in the magazines, such as Linda Lusardi, Sam Fox, Kathy Lloyd and Maria Whittaker.
Rise of the Lad Mags
The 1990s saw the mainstream try to get in on the bloke-focused publishing market, with lad mags such as Loaded, FHM and Front. Whilst these were not exactly porn mags, they did rely heavily on photo sets of models and celebrities in scanty clothing, and were a big influence in the rise of ‘babe’ culture in the UK.
Similar to the 70s and 80s, the 90s saw many glamour models come to the public’s attention and become celebrities, such as Jo Guest, Katie Price/Jordan, Linsey Dawn Mckenzie, plus models who crossed the line between and many more.
British Porn Comes To TV
Before the 1990s, accessing videos of porn was either initially via porn cinemas, then via video tapes as VHS machines became more prevalent in the 1980s. In the 1990s however, satellite and cable TV was launched, which led to new channels coming out to satisfy the British desire for adult content. First was The Adult Channel in 1992, followed by Television X and The Fantasy Channel in 1995 – both run by the magazine publisher Northern & Shell.
Babestation Begins
In 2002, Babestation became the innovator of the ‘babes on TV’ channel. Based around adult chat, the channel featured models interacting with viewers via premium rate phone lines and SMS.
A sister channel to Babestation called Babecast was also launched, in partnership from 1970s porn magazine publisher David Sullivan, giving Babestation a lineage in British porn stretching back for many years. Such was the success of Babestation, that many imitators sprang up, such as Babeworld, Studio66, Bang Babes, Rampant TV, Hot & Wet and many more. Babestation themselves also expanded their channels with Live XXX and Sexstation.
Babestation and the other babe channels created a series of celebrity babes such as Jasmine James, Dani O’Neal, Amanda Rendall and Karina Currie among many others.
British Porn Comes To The Internet
From the late 1990s onwards, porn, just like every other part of our lives, started to move online. The type of porn content available reflected the technology of the time. In the late 1990s/early 2000s, connections were slower, so list type sites called TGPs (Thumbnail Gallery Post), most famously The Hun, were the most popular way to get porn online.
However, as internet speed improved, it became easier to stream video, which led to the boom in porn tube sites. Pornhub was launched in 2007 by a company that later became porn giant Mindgeek. The ability to stream unlimited free porn on the internet took the world by storm, and transformed the porn industry.
Mindgeek used their financial success to buy hundreds of different porn brands, and now run several of the biggest tube sites in addition to Pornhub, such as Youporn and Redtube. Several competitors also have massive success with tube sites, such as Xvideos and Xhamster. These days these are not just the biggest porn sites, they are amongst the biggest websites in the world across all categories.
The Rise of Webcams
Another service enabled by improved internet technology was webcam. Way back in 1996 the Jennicam service, which consisted of a webcam viewing the daily life of a student in her dorm room, was launched. Whilst not specifically a sex/porn service, it showed the potential of the technology, and a series of early webcam platforms such as iFriends, Flirt4free and Cams.com emerged in the late 1990s.
In 2001 LiveJasmin launched, and now in the 2020s, there are dozens of webcam providers such as Streamate, Chaturbate, Cam4, Stripchat and many more, connecting thousands of willing cam models to millions of customers.
In 2015, Babestation started their move into the world of webcam. It was a perfect fit, as they already had hundreds of top British models appearing on their TV channels and interacting with fans. Babestation TV and BabestationCams became a place where webcam users can experience private 121 sessions with all the sexiest Babestation models.
British Porn In The Present Day
Porn continues to dominate the internet, and tube sites, live babeshows, and live sex cam websites are a huge part of this. However, another element that has transformed the business is the rise of fan sites.
Led by OnlyFans, these sites allow models to connect directly with their fans and charge them monthly fees for exclusive content. This development showed a welcome direction in the world of porn, by allowing the models to control their own career more closely.
